Howard Stein retired in November 2004 as Managing Director of Operational Risk of Citigroup’s Global Corporate and Investment Bank. He was one of the two Citigroup representatives to the Basel Committee’s operational risk planning and implementation committees through the IIF. He was also the founding Chairman of the RMA’s Operational Risk Council and a member of the RMA’s Board and Executive Committee.

Howard spent 26 years at Citigroup, mostly in risk management but also running several business units. He was a Senior Credit Officer, having that designation at various times in both the Consumer and Corporate businesses. For much of the last decade he was the Chief Risk Officer for Citigroup’s Global Transaction Services business; earlier he was CRO for the Visa and Mastercard business. Prior to his career at Citigroup, Howard worked in the Treasurer’s Office of General Motors Corporation, then spent nine years in government service.

Howard’s role as Chairman of the RiskBusiness Advisory Board is multi-dimensional, covering internal corporate governance and business strategy development, through client-facing marketing and project activity to industry liaison and development.

Howard has a degree in economics from the University of Michigan and an MBA from Harvard Business School. He is currently a Trustee and Treasurer of New York City’s public radio stations and of Pratt Institute, a college of architecture and design. Howard is also the Senior Risk Advisor to Searchspace, a company that provides Anti-Money Laundering and Compliance systems, and a member of the Financial Services Volunteer Corps’ Risk Management Advisory Committee.
